While using Time Dilation, time will slow down to a crawl when you're standing still, giving you the chance to scan an enemy target's level, weaknesses, and some humorous flavor text about them. Time Dilation: The most important piece of your combat arsenal (besides having properly upgraded weapons and armor), is the Time Dilation ability, represented by a purple bar beneath your health pool. Using Time Dilation while aiming and standing still will allow you to scope out enemy weaknesses and proficiencies, which leads us to our next section. Shotguns in The Outer Worlds, for example, basically want you to be inside the monster to deal damage. You can also augment some weapons and armor with mods to increase their potency. The weapon is far lower level than the enemies you're trying to fight. The weapon is damaged and must be repaired at a workbench (or in the field, if you have the skill). The enemies are strong against that particular weapon (for example, robots take more damage from electrical weapons than regular bullets). If you find your weapons doing ridiculously inadequate amounts of damage, it may be one of the following problems: While out in the field, you'll get weapons and armor that are appropriate to your level, but some of the game's more unique named weapons, armor, and "Science" weapons will remain at the level you found them at unless you tinker them up. Tinkering allows you to increase the level of an item, effectively, increasing its damage or defensive properties. If you put 20 points into engineering or have a companion with engineering capabilities, you'll unlock the ability to "tinker" with weapons and armor. If you can get past the compromise in visual quality, The Outer Worlds’ Nintendo Switch port is worth the revisit.Source: The Outer Worlds (Image credit: Source: The Outer Worlds) The Outer Worlds is an excellent video game, and it’s simply fantastic to have on the go. I was also pleased that the game didn’t take an eternity to load as I feared it would. There were a handful of hiccups, but I also experienced those while playing on other platforms. With new locations and stories to explore, Peril on Gorgon adds even more for players to do.įrom a performance standpoint, The Outer Worlds is fine on the Switch. The previous point is compounded by the fact that The Outer Worlds’ first DLC expansion, Peril on Gorgon, is also available on the Switch. Being able to have a game of that level that I can go and play on the couch or while sitting in the passenger seat of a car is awesome. Though the game’s completion time isn’t the longest, the sheer amount of options always encouraged repeat playthroughs. The Outer Worlds succeeded because it’s a dense RPG, with a number of branching pathways and stories to discover. It’s a drum we’ve been beating for four years now, but the Switch’s portable capability is a magic that simply can’t be matched. Of course, the game lets you disable/tweak this feature if you feel otherwise. It’s a feature present in a lot of shooters on the Switch, and one that works super well in The Outer Worlds, especially when you consider that the analog sticks on the Joy-Cons maybe aren’t the best for precise aiming. With a tilt and turn of the console or controller, players can aim their weapons in-game. The Outer Worlds takes advantage of the Switch’s motion control capabilities to introduce gyro-aiming to the game. If you’re not a graphics junkie, and can tolerate a little wonkiness here and there, The Outer Worlds is still quite a joy on Switch. Not that The Outer Worlds was a showcase of graphical achievement, but it’s quite clear that the game looks its worst on Switch, though I have to admit, though isn’t a surprise. The Outer Worlds on the Nintendo Switch suffers in a similar vein to so many other titles ported to the hybrid console, as there’s a clear step down in visual quality. Though it was only available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation upon launch, The Outer Worlds arrived on the Nintendo Switch last year, allowing players to take the game on the go. Released back in 2019, this RPG received much acclaim, and was a strong contender in our own Game of the Year race. The Outer Worlds is one of the latest games from Obsidian Entertainment.
